Nudes and Neon

Exhibition May 21 – June 28, 2012

Artist Reception Friday, June 8, 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Nudes and Neon:Elaine Jason, Stephanie Hogen, and Candace Nicol

This is a 3-person exhibition that investigates the connection between body, light, and reflections. In a beautiful and poetic way, this show combines a sense of art history with a reference to Reno’s history. “Nudes and Neon” simultaneously references the art historical legacy of the nude form and exists within the modern and contemporary aesthetic found in the use of new media such as neon. Sierra Arts is proud to present a collection of artists that are engaging in the dialogue of our city and our times.

As conceptually driven artists, Elaine Jason, Stephanie Hogen, and Candace Nicol are all concerned in some way with the creation and perception of personal realities and personal landscapes. Their explorations are reflected in a shared curiosity with light, reflections, layering, fragmentation, and an redefining of beauty. Using asseblage as a vehicle, these artists have come together to explore intersections between their work. Throughout this exhibition, the artists draw upon similarities of form and concept while honoring individual subject matter and content.

Elaine Jason has been creating Neon sculptures for over forty years.
Her sources of inspiration have been found in the ever-changing
landscapes, often in the use of discarded materials and objects from
construction sites. She reassembles these objects into sensual neon
sculptures – redefining beauty from scraps.

Candace Nicol also uses the technique of reassembly, but in her pieces,
Nicol enlarges, crops, cuts, and reassembles photographs of male
nudes. The components of her pieces are arranged along a grid format
to suggest fragmentation and a mapping of the body surface. The
largeness of scale and the layering of the glazes and resin over the
prints result in a vista of pleasure, defamiliarizing body parts and
emphasizing contradictions to the idealized forms in Western culture.

Stephanie Hogen’s sharp sense of aesthetic has led her to create a
series of sensual photographs of the female nude. Nudity, however, is
not the emphasis for Hogen. Rather, Hogen is interested in the
interplay of light and shadows. In these works, the uncluttered human
form serves as a palette for the numberless nuances of light and
shadow, as well as a reminder of who we are under our daily mask of
pretense.

Galleries at Work locations:

Michael Stosic, Bank of America Lobby, 50 W. Liberty Street, Reno, NV
Michael Stosic started painting professionally nine years ago. He has had several shows in the Reno area and his work has sold to many different people from all around the country.
“When I discovered the works of Claude Monet, I knew I wanted to learn how to paint impressionistically. I bought lots of books on the subject, and in 2003 I was fortunate enough to have studied with Lois Griffel, then director of the Cape Cod School of Art.”
“I have worked very hard on the study of color and light and I have developed my own impressionistic style to bring out the beauty of nature.”
James Graves, B of A, 3rd Floor
This Incline Village artist creates “cyber-art images of clouds” in the Reno Area, captured using high resolution imaging equipment and enhanced by the infusion of color using state of the art computer equipment. Graves recently experienced a breakthrough allowing him to immerse himself in the creation of these images.
Deon Reynolds at State Street Plaza, 170 S. Virginia Street, 2nd Floor
Deon Reynolds began his life in photography at age 7 and went on to be educated in Portland at the Museum Art School, the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and to apprentice with several renowned artists and photographers.
Reynolds now lives in Eureka, where he operates the Eureka Gallery to sell his work and that of regional artists.
Reynolds explains, “My best work is the product of curiosity: photographs I never intended to take, in places I never intended to visit.”
Basin Street Properties., 200 E. 2nd St.
John Molezzo at BSP 13th floor
Photographer, painter and writer, John Molezzo grew up in Reno, Nevada, went to Manogue H.S., attended UNR, and later moved to California. John later returned home to Reno with his wife Julie and their growing family.
“My work consists mainly of Reno and its beautiful surroundings … I show remnants of the Reno I knew as a kid in the Reno that I see today. Reno’s art is in its buildings and streets and sky and river and mountains and people.”
Jerry Ginsburg at BSP 14th Floor
Gerald Ginsburg is a retired Social Psychologist who has traveled widely with cameras, both on land and under water.
In 1966, he joined the World Health Organization and traveled to Europe, Africa, and South America before returning to Reno in 1968.
Jerry’s interest in photography has remained active throughout his life, but it wasn’t until his retirement that he shifted into professional work in nature and travel photography.
Michael Turpie at Basin Street Properties 15th Floor
Michael Turpie was born in Perth, Scotland. He attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, graduating with a Diploma in drawing and painting and the college’s Postgraduate Diploma.
Michael’s style is very distinctive, working often in strong, vibrant color with a variety of textures. A recent journey to Peru and contact with native artists there has brought new inspiration and resulted in a series of oils and pastels documenting the Inca Trail.
Jolene Adams at NV Energy
Adams graduated from Reno High; received her B.A. in photography from Montana State University, and continued as a grad student at Hawthorn University.
“Growing up hiking and camping in the Sierras, I have always had a strong appreciation of the natural world. It was in Montana that I found deep solace and inspiration in the presence of natural beauty and decided photography could help me express what I was blessed to see, and therefore, to feel…”
Adams is a self employed photographer in London, UK.
Will Barber at Community Foundation, 1885 S. Arlington Ave, Suite 103, Reno, NV
“After moving to Reno, I became interested in photography and became aware that in landscape photography, a photographer tries to simplify ordered chaos by taking into account lines, textures, forms, colors and relationships between major and minor elements…”
Barber has become fascinated by the interaction of mono-color and light, and photographs northern Nevada under varying light conditions.
“I found there was a beautiful world out there and being to emphasize the influence of light on its appearance.”
Chad Sorg at Bill Pearce Auto, 780 Kietzke Lane, Reno NV
Chad Sorg has practiced art in the areas of painting, drawing, photography, video and performance. He opened Blue Lyon Gallery featuring local, up-and-coming artists. After Bluelyon closed in 2005, Sorg went on to be instrumental in the creation of NadaDada Motel in 2007.
Sorg does not plan to abandon his initial love painting mixed media abstractions and portraiture, which he’s been doing since 1993. “Promoting others is the best way to promote yourself,” Sorg says.
Shari Havelka at Jones Vargas
Shari Havelka cites her travels and experiences abroad as a major inspiration for her paintings, which are abstract, colorful and highly textural. Shari emphasizes trying to appeal to the physical sense of touch.
The high-intensity color in her work reflects her visual experiences during trips to places such as the Caribbean and the Amazon. She also highlights the politics and social situations of the places she has visited in her work.
In her own words, “Encaustic, Series I paintings are reflective of the current financial and construction climates…”
Zoltan Janvary at Wild River Grille, 17 S. Virginia, Suite 180, Reno, NV
Zoltan Janvary began his art and teaching career in Budapest, Hungary. In 1995, he relocated to the US, settling in Reno, Nevada. He is greatly influenced by his family’s rich history as well as his country’s literary and mythological traditions. These forces, blended with those of the new world, have created an individual, original style.
He currently teaches at the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College as a drawing and painting instructor.
Richard Allen Wells at Jones Vargas

Reno resident Richard Wells has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. His work has been heavily influenced by the explosion of color seen in local landscapes, costumes and architecture.
His works have been created in a variety of media, including oil, acrylic, collage, pastel, sculpture and assemblage, and reflect his love of vibrant color, texture and the juxtaposition of disparate elements.
Mr. Wells became interested in the fine arts while attending High School in Colorado and continued specialized training in scenic design at Mesa College, Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Artists in Residence Program, a partnership between Renown Health Foundation, Sierra Arts Foundation, and the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, is dedicated to connecting fourth year medical students with the power of the arts. This project was created with the aim of developing and nurturing the mutually beneficial skills of observation, analysis, empathy, and self-reflection essential to both artistic practice and human medical care. Our hope is to deepen the understanding of the connections between medicine and the arts and humanities and to examine first hand the claim that creativity and expression are integral components to healing. The broader goal of this project is to advocate for the integration of the arts into the environment and delivery of care within healthcare facilities. Sierra Arts is hosting an exhibition of artwork that has been developed through this program over the last year. Please join us in experiencing and supporting the broader range of art practice.

from February 16 – May 18, 2012.

Dean Burton

I am a photographic experimentalist with painterly leanings. My education is from cross disciplinary art departments at the University of Arizona and San Jose State University in California. I live in Northern Nevada and find much of my visual inspiration from its unique landscape. I am also interested in various art historical styles such as color field painting, minimalism, geometric abstraction, and abstract photography. A list of my favorite artists would include Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Barnett Newman, Harry Callahan, and Joan Fontcuberta. I find my practice lately to be mixing “straight” photographs with “synthetic” compositions.

John Molezzo

Local photographer, painter, and writer John Molezzo creates large collages of Reno’s downtown area using digital prints on canvas with oil paints and wax mediums. “As seen in my ever continuing series of collages entitled “Visions Redux” and also in my more traditional shots, I show remnants of the Reno I knew as a kid and the Reno that I see today in an attempt to let the viewer experience for themselves my own personal vision of our wonderful city.” John grew up in Reno, attended UNR, and later moved to California. While in San Diego, He worked with nationally recognized Sledgehammer Theatre and cofounded the multimedia art group IEC.

“I have always been drawn to our local landmarks, our wonderful old motel signs as well as our architecture and gaming establishments. “The feeling” of my images comes from mixture of those memories. What was my past is now my present and who I am today as an artist is a direct reflection of my early years growing up here. Reno’s art is in its buildings and streets and sky and river and mountains and people.” http://www.saveriocine.com/

Exhibition March 19 – April 27, 2012

Artist Reception Friday, March 23, 5:00pm – 7:00pm

In her new body of work, Paganelli explores the notions of value, legacy, ethics, order, and virtue. As a person who embraces change and believes that both art and life should have meaning, Paganelli is using her artistic practice to meditate on some of the most basic and critical human questions: how to be ethical, what is worthy of value, how to navigate in an increasingly diverse and complicated world, and what kind of world we are creating and leaving behind for those who will follow. Paganelli has created a series of work that follows the structure of the alphabet, assigning a virtue to each letter. This group of intaglio prints showcases Paganelli’s personal iconography and storytelling style as well as her deep desire to see and create balance, both in her artwork and in the world at large. Images of bird and ravens, skulls and skeletons of buildings juxtapose with flowers, yarn, and pieces of script. Just like the virtues they are representing, these images tell a story, but the narratives are not always literal. “Each piece is the result of an entire experience: the observation, the mood, the thoughts and feelings.” As a result each piece calls the viewer to contemplate on the implications of the images and virtues.

Artist Statement

Drawing is always the starting point for my work. I draw from nature, still life and
photos. I’m always looking for things that speak to me. The printmaking process
allows me to combine literal objects and experiment with layering techniques to
create imagery that integrates new meaning. Elements that are essential in my work
are line and balance. I’m concerned with the way one line interacts with another
and how the juxtaposition of weight and space creates balance.
As the world around me is constantly changing so is my need to explore new ideas,
emotions and techniques. All of my work begins with a direction and a purpose,
but once I’m fully engaged in the printmaking process the work takes on a life of
it’s own. My intent is not to portray literal interpretations but have the work speak
for itself. Art making is my passion it empowers and vitalizes my life. The creative
process is what brings me into the studio day after day.\
