Caring
Research presented by the National Endowment for the Arts indicates that art contributes to the perception of quality of medical care by bringing more warmth, stimulation and comfort to a healthcare facility.
In addition, it states that art can have a positive impact on the mood of patients, their families, and the healthcare professionals who are tending them.
At Sierra Arts, we are innovating new programs based on this research that bring the arts and healthcare together here in our Reno facilities.
Through ourĀ Musician at the Bedside program, patients in Pediatrics, Oncology, and Skilled Nursing are provided the opportunity to break up the stresses of treatment of a long hospital stay with the help of our resident musician, Colin Ross.
Performances are provided in both group and one on one sessions, and patients are encouraged to not only enjoy but engage in the performances themselves. These performances contribute to the relaxation of not only the patients, but the professionals providing their care as well – leading to decreased stress levels and higher quality of care.
Similar performances are provided in elder care facilities around town through ourĀ Elder Care Concert Series program. This program allows seniors who do not have the means or the health to attend live musical performances with the opportunity to hear a wide range of music including classical, jazz, swing, big band, folk and more.
At Sierra Arts, we are continuing to explore and innovate in the ways that healthcare and the arts intersect. Your contribution can help to ensure that these music based programs survive, that new programs based in healthcare facilities can be developed, and that patients experience the highest quality of care possible during this stressful time in their lives.
